Happy Tails
Honey
I
adopted Dot who is now known as Honey almost a year
ago. When she is not in your sight, her Molly Melt-Down
kicks in and she starts balling. Shes such a good girl, and
is so patient to wait to get her harness on to go outside. Big buddy
Muggs doesnt seem to be impressed on most days, but certainly
keeps a close eye on her. I wait for her at night to come and dive-bomb
my face, and give me a kiss goodnight. Thank you so much for allowing
me the opportunity to have such a cuddle bug.

Shakespeare
I just wanted to give you an
update on Shakespeare D0909 (now known as "Spanky"). We adopted
him in July 2009 from your organization. He has been a perfect fit
to our lifestyle and completely changed
the dynamics of our house. It had been 2 1/2 years since we lost
Buddy (at 19 after 16 years)and it was time for another hairy kid.
We are active members of various walking clubs in NS and Spanky
already has walked over 200 kms since July with us, everywhere from
the Valley to Truro. He has also become an expert at camping. His
favourite game is to "find the duck" somewhere in the house. He
lives by his nose and can find anything. His recent new fascination
has been plastic bottles (empty ones, that is). Put the cap on it
and let him go. He will play with one for hours, chasing it around
the hardwood floors. We are still working on a couple of "issues"
he has. For being such a social dog within the house, he, on occasion,
will go after kids on bikes, joggers and basically other people
we will meet while out walking. His other issue is playing with
dogs. As we do not know his past history, I was hoping anyone who
knew him previously could contact me at sandyhickey@eastlink.ca
and provide me with any of his background. I must say, that his
previous owners did invest a lot of time with him as he is crate
trained, sits immediately and is fixated on retrieving balls, etc.
We do not have any problem letting him off his leash in a off leash
area park or in our yard, where he is contained by the electric
fence. I would like to thank you Mark, for taking the time to bring
us to your home and meet Spanky that day. We keep saying we don't
know how we lived the last couple of years without a dog, especially
him.

Brogan
I adopted Brogan from the Kings
SPCA last fall. I’ve wanted a dog since I was a little girl, but
I was waiting until I had my own home and yard. I originally adopted
from the Halifax SPCA a month earlier. I
chose the wrong dog because I based it only on his appearance, and
hadn’t done my homework on his breed. Meanwhile, I’d been visiting
Brogan for a little over a month. While I found him very sweet,
I wasn’t sure he was what I was looking for, physically. Sounds
shallow now writing it. But that’s what it was. I went in to look
at a purebred that had just arrived at the shelter. I found out
he had3 other adoption applications in on him, after only 24 hours
or so. Brogan had been there over a month and a half. I decided
then to take Brogan home. He has the loyalty of the sheppard, the
energy and hunting instincts of the beagle, and a touch of the lab’s
simple-mindedness (no offence labs). What a perfect mix. He’s the
kind of dog that even nondog lovers, love. I’m constantly being
reminded by others of how well behaved he is, how smart, and how
loving he is. Brogan rests his head on my shoulder from the backseat
as we drive. He jumps up every time I do, assuming we’re going for
another walk. He carries his teddy monkey around in his mouth, and
although I’ve seen him tear toys to shreds, he only curls up with
the monkey and gives it a good cleaning. The only thing he seems
to love more than a walk off leash in the woods, is a belly rub,
for hours on end if you can spare it. He brings me happiness when
were out for walks and comfort when I need it through rubbing his
big silky ears. He seems to understand my moods, and supports them
like a great friend does. My thanks to the SPCA for bringing him
into my life.

Rusty
We
were lucky enough to adopt Rusty in April 2008. He has been a shining
star in our lives ever since. His personality is one of a kind and
is still growing whether it be playing fetch, showing his new and
old tricks, diving four feet in water to retrieve his favorite toy
or snuggling at home on the couch, he is a loving and loyal companion.
He has made quite a few new friends and siblings since he came into
our lives including our persian cat "Wish" our hunting beagles Allie
& Hunter and his cousin Taboo. Rusty has a lovely and kind demeanor
that allows him to be friendly with even the unlikeliest animals.
He's great with kids; he'll do just about anything for a piece of
cheese and is a HUGE mama's boy. But honestly we are just lucky
to be a part of his life and we wouldn't trade him for the world.
Thank you [to the Kings County SPCA] for working so hard to rehabilitate
Rusty and allowing him to come into our lives.
